field-validation-error message location

Is there any way to suppress, or better yet, control the location of the field-validation-error message?

I put asterisks to the right of the required input fields on my form.  The error message always pops in between the input field and the asterisk and usually forces text wrapping that does not look clean.  I'd like the message to show up below my input control with the asterisk unmoved at the right of the control.

If you are using jQuery one way to resolve this is to place a <span class='field-validation-error'></span> where you want the error message to be displayed.
xVal looks for this and links jQuery Validation.

I have not looked at the xVal.AspNetNative.js logic.
